Rugby teams survive and thrive on sponsorship money. Teams use these vital funds to buy uniforms, training materials and game-day equipment, rent playing fields and pay referees, among other uses. Before searching for a sponsor for your rugby team, decide what you will spend the money on, such as game-day uniforms. Also identify what exposure the sponsorship will provide a company, such as having its name and logo on the team’s jerseys.
1. Determine what you can offer in return for sponsorship. In writing a proposal to prospective sponsors, you need to offer the sponsor a clear return on its investment. For example, if sponsorship funds will pay for new team uniforms, you can offer to display the sponsor’s name and logo across the front of the jersey and on the leg of the shorts.
2. List local, regional and national companies that you believe may be interested in sponsoring your rugby team‘s uniform. Draw up a list of sports shops, particularly those that stock rugby equipment, and local companies based in your rugby team’s home town or city. If your rugby team is associated with a college, consider contacting alumni of the college asking for sponsorship from the companies for which they work.
3. Draft a stock letter that you will send to companies asking for sponsorship. Personalize each letter with the company name and the name of the person you are contacting. Emphasize exactly what you offer in exchange for the sponsorship and include your full contact details. Inform potential sponsors of the impact of their sponsorship, such as how many spectators are at your games and any media coverage your team receives.
4. Print the personalized letters, sign them, put them into envelopes and mail them.
5. Wait two weeks before contacting every prospective sponsor on your list with a polite telephone call asking if they received your letter.
