Paintball courses can take advantage of natural surroundings to make the play more interesting.
Paintball is a popular activity that combines tactical skills, physical agility and, everyone’s favorite, shooting people with balls of paint. A paintball course can be set up in a variety of places, and the costs can run into the thousands of dollars. Set up your own course in woods on your property to take advantage of natural cover and minimize costs. Place bunkers and bases in strategic locations and mark the course boundaries.
1. Mark the boundaries of the course with tape strung between trees, rocks or posts. Inspect the area where you will place your course, remove debris such as limbs or rocks, and fill in any holes to eliminate hazards. Find locations for at least two bases to be used by competing teams. Note good locations for additional bunkers and other places to hide or provide cover for the players.
2. Place stacked bales of straw at strategic locations on opposite ends of the course for the bases. Stack as many as necessary for the bases and to provide adequate cover for defending the bases. A flag or other marker can be placed on top of the bases if you wish. These flags can be the prize the opposing teams try to capture during the game.
3. Place more bales of straw strategically around the course to serve as bunkers. Stack them and lash them as necessary. Dig a few short trenches large enough for a few players and about 3 feet deep for additional bunkers. Shovel the dirt into the burlap bags and tie them off. Place these bags of dirt around the trenches to provide more cover for defense or ambush.
4. Estimate your costs. The cost for a paintball course such as this will be minimal. A challenging course using the woods’ natural cover can be completed for just the cost of the bales of straw, the burlap bags and the boundary tape. Even a fairly elaborate course built in this manner can be completed with a budget under $300 and possibly much less depending on how much material, such as the bales, you plan to use.
